When an old A/C unit is on the fritz, it comes as no surprise. However, if you’ve taken good care of your A/C, it may not need to be replaced just yet. However, the opposite is true for newer A/C systems that weren’t installed properly and/or lacked regular maintenance tune ups. There could be a host of problems years before they’re typically due. So, how do you decide to repair or replace your A/C system?

Look for these indicators to solve:

Unusual and Loud Noises

Unusual and loud noises aren’t a good sign no matter how old or young your A/C system is. When you repeatedly hear an unusual noise, it’s generally best to turn off the system and contact an HVAC Professional. Here’s what these noises may mean:

Whirring and droning: If the outdoor unit of your A/C is making a consistent whirring and droning noise, you most likely have a failing compressor. It’s possible to replace the compressor if the rest of your A/C and ductwork are in good shape, but it is an expensive repair — the compressor is the heart of the A/C.
Grinding or screeching: Grinding and screeching noises most often indicate a blower motor problem. You can probably get away with replacing the blower motor without replacing the entire A/C unit.
Squealing: Squealing may indicate a blower motor problem or simply a loose blower assembly that needs to be tightened down. Another possibility is a loose belt. An HVAC technician can diagnose the exact issue.

It’s Running, but Not Cooling!

Another common A/C problem is that it runs, but it doesn’t provide enough cooling output. The usual reasons could include:

Ice accumulation: If you see ice on the evaporator, check your air filter. If it’s dirty, change it and let the ice melt. If the ice returns, you may have a refrigerant or electrical problem.
Low refrigerant: Incorrect refrigerant charge also causes ice on the evaporator. Refrigerant testing must be performed by a certified technician.
