Improving home energy efficiency saves on energy costs and increases household comfort. But for maximum savings, you need a whole-house approach.

In the Bedroom

At bedtime, turn back the thermostat to reduce energy costs. Close any open windows and pull blinds closed to reduce heat loss. Switch off electronics. In the morning, open the blinds to take advantage of the sun’s natural light and heat.

In the Living Room

Reversing ceiling fan blade direction in winter allows a 5-degree thermostat reduction without a loss of comfort. During the summer, you can bump the thermostat up as much as 2 degrees.

When upgrading your home theater system, look for Energy Star certified components. A certified television provides 25 percent more efficiency than a standard model.

In the Kitchen

Energy Star certified appliances are especially important in the kitchen. A certified refrigerator can be approximately 9 percent more efficient than the standard while using half the energy as a 15-year-old model. Whatever model you choose, remember to keep the door closed.

Certified dishwashers are 12 percent more efficient and use 30 percent less water than standard appliances. You can also save water by scraping foods directly into the garbage rather than pre-rinsing.

In the Bathroom

Upgrade to an Energy Star certified ventilation fan. They’re not only quieter, but also provide 55 percent more efficiency than the standard.

Try to use less water — opt for showers over baths and don’t stay in too long. If you’re shaving or brushing your teeth, only run the faucets when you actually need water. Appliances with the Watersense label are also a good investment.

In the Laundry Room

Upgrading appliances? Look for the Energy Star. Certified washers use 45 percent less water and reduce energy usage by 25 percent. Other energy efficiency tips include:
