Halloween is a time for incredible costumes, delicious candy, and spooky decorations. As a homeowner, you might not give much thought to how the decorations you choose affects your HVAC system. To ensure that you’re getting the most out of the holiday without sacrificing your HVAC safety, we are a few HVAC tips to keep in mind:

Blocked Vents

If you love to fill your home with Halloween decorations, be mindful of where you place them. Sizable decorations can inadvertently block your home’s vents, which can hamper your HVAC system’s heating and cooling efforts.

Webbing Decorations

Since fake webs are such an easy decoration to put up, they’re a mainstay for millions of households during Halloween each year. If you decide to add them to your decor, you need to be mindful of the possibility that loose fibers will get into your air. This can speed up the rate in which your system’s air filter clogs up, in addition to negatively impacting your home’s air quality. Check the filter once the holiday is finished to see if it needs to be replaced.

Outdoor Decorations

Sometimes the outdoor decorations are the most fun to put up. As you decorate, pay attention to the placement of certain decorations near your HVAC system’s outdoor unit. Anything that covers up the outdoor unit will impede its performance. Keep at least a 4 – 6 feet clearance around the unit for optimal airflow.

Energy Costs

Small electronic items like witches that cackle and ghosts that shake don’t use a lot of extra power, so they’re probably not something you should be concerned with too much. But if you decide to put on a show for trick-or-treaters with projectors and/or large speakers, you need to be aware of the extra energy costs you’ll incur.
