Ductless mini-splits systems are rapidly becoming the cooling and heating system of choice for individual rooms or other limited zones inside the house. Over the past two years, sales of these highly efficient, compact units have increased 13% in the U.S. and continued growth appears inevitable.

Here’s how many homeowners today are taking advantage of ductless mini-split systems for the best option in indoor comfort.

All Season Conditioning

Ductless mini-split systems are actually compact heat pumps. If you need both heating and cooling in a single unit, the system can provide efficient cooling all summer long like an air conditioner, then reverse function with the flip of a switch and become an efficient heater for winter comfort.

No Ducts

Ducts are common in whole-house central systems, but if you wish to add heating and cooling only to an individual room or two, extending that existing ductwork will be costly. Ductless systems condition add-ons without prohibitive expense and inconvenient construction work.

When Using a Ductless, Mini-Split System is Best

Compact Footprint

Where space and convenience count, a ductless mini-split consists of a downsized outdoor heat pump unit—it’s about the size of a large suitcase—connected to a low-profile indoor air handler/blower that mounts inconspicuously on a wall or ceiling.

Customized Comfort

When occupants of different rooms prefer different temperatures, a single-thermostat central system can’t accommodate multiple settings. With a ductless system, however, each outdoor unit can serve up to five or more indoor air handlers in individual rooms. Each room has its own dedicated thermostat to allow independent, individualized temperature control.

Quick, Easy Installation

If you don’t want the substantial construction project required to install or extend ductwork for a whole-house central system, installing a ductless mini-split involves merely mounting the outside and inside components, then connecting them with a narrow conduit that requires only a three-inch hole in an exterior wall. An qualified, two-person crew can fully install a mini-split to heat/cool one or more individual rooms in a single day.
