Warranty Features Copy Scaled 1

Warranty features are an important part of the purchase of a new HVAC unit. Today, heating and cooling systems have longer service lives than ever before. This means you’ll be living with the terms of the HVAC warranty for many years. Understanding typical warranty features before you buy a unit — and ensuring you comply with stipulations in the warranty after it’s installed — are essential to ensure you receive proper coverage should you ever require it. Here are major HVAC warranty features, plus some fine print that is in typical HVAC warranties.

Standard Warranty

The length of warranty coverage is important. A longer warranty time span generally indicates the manufacturer’s confidence in their product. Five years is the basic standard, but certain manufacturers offer longer terms up to 10 years on specific units. The standard warranty requires registration of the new unit with the manufacturer within a specific time frame after purchase.

Parts Only

In most cases, the manufacturer’s warranty covers only parts and not labor. The standard parts warranty is five years for most parts. However, certain very costly critical components, such as the furnace heat exchanger and the AC compressor, may be eligible for warranty coverage that extends up to 20 years. This varies according to the manufacturer.

Regularly Scheduled Professional Maintenance

Most manufacturers require regularly scheduled preventative maintenance by a qualified HVAC contractor in order to keep the warranty on a covered unit valid. Your HVAC contractor should have a record of all the services provided on your system. Still it’s a good idea that you keep copies as well.
